Employee Appreciation Day provides a day to talk, play, win, and sweat

The annual Ho-Chunk Nation Employee Appreciation Day was held on Friday, June 29, at the Ho-Chunk RV Resort Campground near Lyndon Station.

Despite the temperatures soaring to 98 degrees, many Ho-Chunk government employees arrived to enjoy games, a meal and talking with each other.

The game drawing the most attention was bingo, although other games, such as horseshoes, volleyball, and canoe races, also was held.

Jon Greendeer provided a ‘hay ride,” minus the hay, on a wagon for attendees to view the land owned by the Ho-Chunk Nation. A stop was made to what is referred to as Nine Eagles Resort Camp. People were able to tour the buildings and take a walk to the shore of the Wisconsin River to view petroglyphs, or paintings made by Ho-Chunk people perhaps hundreds of years ago.

The meal was catered by BP Smokehouse of Tomah.

At the end of the event, the winners of the games were announced, with Randall Blackdeer ll and Levi Winneshiek winning the volleyball contest. Patrick Hall and Montana Youngthunder won at horseshoes
Adam Meinerz and Niklas Anderson won the canoe races.

Everyone departed the grounds following the drawing of tickets for door prizes, which varied by power tools to gift cards to television sets. The top prize of a DeWalt leaf blower and weed trimmer combination was won by Donna Decorah, who works at the Tomah Tribal Aging Unit
