Masks & Social Distancing Required at District Area Meetings

By Ardith Van Riper

July 8 marks the first District Area Meeting since the April 22 announcement that the Ho-Chunk Nation Legislature discontinued Area Meetings due to COVID-19 pandemic concerns.  The Legislative Branch were following the advice of health professional by cancelling District Area Meetings.

This first meeting included District 1 and was held in the field outside of District 1 Community Center on Warrior Avenue near Black River Falls.

District 3 also scheduled an area meeting for July 8 at the Madison Branch Office on Tradewinds Parkway.  However, that meeting was cancelled due to the weather in that region.

Multiple meeting notices provided information to participants to bring their own chairs, bring bug repellant, that temperatures will be taken, and that masks and social distancing are highly recommended.  Additionally, no meals were served and there were no meeting payouts.

Instead, meeting organizers supplied hand sanitizer, face masks, and water to attendees.  Some provided a light snack.

Multiple other Area Meetings followed similar guidelines and conducted the meetings outdoors.

District 2 limited La Crosse in-person attendance to 10 for safety reasons and offered attendance by WebEx.  Wisconsin Dells met in the Lower Dells ballroom of Ho-Chunk Gaming – Wisconsin Dells Convention Center.
