Members of the Ho-Chunk Nation gathered April 11 at the
Sacred Springs in Pheasant Branch Conservancy for the annual spring water
blessing.
Led by Thomas Redbird IV and members of the Water Spirit
Clan, the ceremony included a drum circle and tobacco offering as part of the
seasonal gathering.
The tradition involves placing tobacco in the left hand,
sprinkling it into a bowl, and pouring it into the water as part of the
blessing.
Those in attendance were asked to be present and observe
respectfully without recording.
The Ho-Chunk Nation partnered with Clean Lakes Alliance to
invite community members to witness the ceremony and learn more about the
tradition.
Redbird shared that caring for these spaces continues to be
a responsibility carried by the clan, with a focus on protecting the water and
keeping it for future generations.
“That is our charge, as a family and as a clan, to protect
these areas,” Redbird said.
