The Ho-Chunk Nation Legislature is proud to support the
creation of the Ho-Chunk Garden at the Riverside International Friendship
Gardens near Riverside Park in La Crosse, WI. This garden is dedicated to Betsy
Thunder, a respected Ho-Chunk healer with a legacy that continues to inspire.
It is incredible to see her story and the beliefs of the Hoocak people brought
to life in this meaningful space.
The garden will include native plants and the medicines that
Betsy used in her healing practices. These medicines reflect her vast
traditional knowledge. The garden will be a living reminder of her
contributions and the connection the Hoocak people have with the land we live
on.
This project is made possible through the collaboration of
the Ho-Chunk Nation, the Riverside International Friendship Gardens Board, the
City of La Crosse Parks Department, and Bluff Country Master Gardeners, working
together to honor Betsy Thunder and Ho-Chunk culture.
Construction tentatively begins in April with completion in
August or early September. If the
project progresses as planned, the opening dedication would take place in
October 2025 on Indigenous Peoples Day.
