Honoring Myrtle “Hiyugewiga” Long

Myrtle Long retires after 47 years of dedicated service to the Ho-Chunk Nation.  Her legacy of compassion, cultural preservation, and strength was celebrated at different events.

On August 7, 2025, at the Fifth Annual Family Healing Camp near Black River Falls, Myrtle Long was presented with a Recognition Citation from the Ho-Chunk Nation Legislative Branch — a well-deserved tribute to her decades of service and commitment.

Myrtle’s journey began in September 1978 with the Wisconsin Winnebago Business Committee (WWBC). Over 47 years, she served in Social Services, Labor, and Health, always bringing her heart, wisdom, and leadership to the Ho-Chunk Nation.

In January 2001, she founded the Clan Mothers, a program that uplifts young Ho-Chunk women through mentorship, cultural knowledge, guidance, and belonging. She invited a representative from each of our 12 clans to join her — ensuring that all voices were heard and honored.

On August 10, a surprise retirement devotional prayer services and dinner took place at the Fairchild Community Center Building in Fairchild, WI.

Myrtle has been, and will always be, an inspiration to our community.
