On March 28, the community celebrated a truly remarkable
milestone: Walter R. Whitehorse, a proud Ho-Chunk tribal member from Madison,
WI, turned 100 years old!
Known by his Ho-Chunk name, Wii Wakšik Hirakaraga, meaning
Takes Care of the Flag, Walter has dedicated his life to serving his community,
veterans, and Indigenous peoples. His legacy of strength, perseverance, and
unity is an inspiration to all.
The celebration took place at the Ho-Chunk Nation Madison
Branch Office with Lance Long as Master of Ceremonies, the Wisconsin Dells
Singers rendering appropriate songs, Paul Cloud as the Head Veterans Dancer,
William Kemp II as the Head Male Dancer, Mya Estebo as the Head Female Dancer,
and the Sanford WhiteEagle Legion Post 556 and VFW Post 7591 as the Color
Guards.
In honor of his incredible contributions, the City of
Madison has officially proclaimed March 28, 2025, as WALTER WHITEHORSE DAY. A
day to reflect on his invaluable impact and celebrate his century of life.
